I can get links to files to work in Writer region, but being able to auto generate would be great. I can't quite figure it out.

auto generate ... you mean click on an ordinary text region
to convert in Writer Region and open the WR ribbon.
There is one more option you may need from Settings.
... the Wrap option(s) custom/page.
Custom delivers the stretch RHS handle.
Superb for inserting math region(s) in the WR.
In few clicks, you can offer an abstract publishing style.
No matter the size/color of an ordinary text region,
paste in WR ... default Arial ... then Settings.
