How to: 1) enter equal sign as text? 2) Make Icons larger? - Relearning sMath after a years absence - Messages
#1 Posted: 11/8/2021 1:18:29 PM
I explored this amazing program about a year ago...
and am trying to pickup where I left off.
Unfortunately I'm suffering from "Use it or Loose it" syndrome.
Can't remember how to put the equal sign in as text... and not have it attempt to evaluate or define a variable or whatever.
1 - How to enter the equal sign in as text?
For instance entering a comment like this:
"The formula is = to the square root of a+b/c"
2 - Anyway to make the icons larger?
Thanks for any help.

Hello Jean and Thanks for answering my post... However I can't figure out what you are showing me. I guess I'm thick today.
After trying to play with Ctrl+= I looked it up and found...
Ctrl+= - Insert Boolean "Equal to"
I tried starting the text entry with a " and that kinda works if I put space after numbers...
For example:
It seems like sMath knew this was all text...
"is 2 + 2 = 4 or is it = 5
but with no space after numbers it thinks its a mathematical function like entering...
"is 2+2=
won't let me type text after it and yields the answer "4"
For reference: The original questions were...
1 - How to enter the equal sign in as text?
For instance entering an all text comment like this:
"The formula is = to the square root of a+b/c"
2 - Anyway to make the ICONS larger on the Toolbar?
So I'm still unsure of the answers for either of the two.
Thanks again for responding to my post.

On the question there was a minimum of debate (here on the forum). The author has introduced this automation to recognize mathematics within a text to give the possibility to define mathematics in the text. For some it was too invasive and some correction was made by the author. We need to become familiar with the instrument and is acceptable but it is not a dogma.

... Formatted Label is lot more advanced/presentable.

Jean,
I downloaded and installed the "Conditionally Formatted Labels" Plug In you linked to.
To get it started I took the cue from your reply and found...
Insert > Writer Region
I entered a few lines having to...
Shift Click at the end of each line
I discovered if I Right Click in the region and click "Settings"
I get the Text modification Dialog
Where I can color lines, bold text, find special symbols, etc.
Cool! Hope I did it right. It seems to work so maybe I'm in the ball park.
Is that the proper procedure for using the Conditionally Formatted Labels Plug-In?
Thanks for your help !

Overlord,
Thanks for the tip.
The "Deactivate Text Region" option in the Edit Menu only appears under certain circumstances it seems.
I must start typing the first word and then click Edit and Deactivate Text Region appears and I can turn it off...
but if I type a word and hit space... the option is not there.
Am I missing something on finding the Deactivate Text Region option?
The "Automatic Replacement" choice under the Edit Menu
is also hard to find as it only appears after I type a word followed by a space.
So, same question...
Am I missing something on finding the "Automatic Replacement" option?
BTW, once I found the "Automatic Replacement" option and turned it off for Equations
It seemed I could enter just about anything with out sMath wanting to calculate...
For example...
Is 2+2=4 or is 2+2=5
But it continued to work properly if I entered something valid like...
a = 2
b = 3
a + b =
where upon sMath would render 5 as the answer...
Conclusions: May be best to leave Automatic Replacement Equations off all the time unless I want auto calc on in a text frame... right?
Thanks again for the help everyone !

WroteWhere I can color lines, bold text, find special symbols, etc.
You can do most of things you need with only Text Region.
You can change font, size, bold, italic, color, background color, etc.
You mostly won't need writer region plugin.
We couldn't change internal Text Regions fonts, size, etc back then.
Writer Region plugin was an attempt to include that needs.
Now I use it only for very niche editings.
Jean insists to use very old version of Smath (build 6179).
That old version doesn't have a lot of latest release capabilities.
And it has some calculation errors too. (ref: Andrey, author of SMath)
Conditional Format Label plugin has totally different purposes.
Please download the Reference Book from Tools>Plugins>Interactive books.
And read the CFL plugin section.

Greetings,
To the best of my knowledge, there are a two options:

To the best of my knowledge, there are a two options:
- Turn off Automatic replacement --> Equations:
- This is an option for any given text region (context menu)
- This setting can be turned off and saved as 'default'; the file "...\[USER_NAME]\AppData\Roaming\SMath\settings.inf" supports the setting: 「AutoEquations=false」
- manually type (or copy/paste) the character code: 「\003D\」: this will auto-convert to the 「=」 when typed in a text region
\003D\
