Since every element of your matrix is an area, you can ask SMath to convert every element of the matrix with the same syntax that you would use on a simple equation:
1) select the result matrix
2) a black dot will pop up at the end of it
3) type 'ft^2 on the black dot

In case you had a matrix with different units on different columns, things would be slighlty different: instead of one single unit of measure to type, you should think in terms of matrix multiplication between the result matrix and the necessary "unit of measure matrix". See example below. Input method is the same (select black dot and type the required "unit of measure matrix" )

Thank you fedeghi. I am finding SMath useful in my studies, it adds a professional touch. Many things are taken for granted when using a pencil and paper! Thanks again for your help.
